Madhyapur Thimi (often simply “Thimi”) is an ancient municipality in Bhaktapur District, at the heart of the Kathmandu Valley. It covers only about 11.47 km² but had roughly 120,000 residents by 2021, making it one of Nepal’s most densely populated cities. Thimi lies between Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, on slightly elevated terrain. This historic Newar town is over 2,000 years old and is celebrated as a center of Newar culture. Thimi’s heritage includes colorful street festivals, traditional pottery production, and many local temples (for example, the Balkumari Temple). Its dense urban core and deep cultural traditions underscore Thimi’s identity as a living museum of Newar heritage and one of the valley’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements.
